Porsche and car enthusiasts alike will remember the legendary 1967 911R, the fastest and lightest 911 that Porsche had developed at the time. Only 23 were built and exclusively used in motorsport. Ferry Porsche and racing mechanic, Rolf Wutherich, stripped the existing 911S of all unnecessary weight– doors, lids, front fenders, front and rear sections, and all windows (save the windshield) were made of plastic. Anything that was not absolutely essential was removed including carpets, radio, footrests, A/C and even the passenger sun visor. Thanks to these extreme measures, the original 911R achieved a breathtaking weight of only 1,764 lbs.

By contrast, the 2016 911R was not made for the track at all, but rather solely for driver connection and amusement. Using the widebody chassis from the GT3RS and its 500 hp 4.0 liter flat-6 engine, it is only paired with a newly-developed 6-speed manual transmission.

Although weighing nearly twice as much as its predecessor, the 2016 incarnation, as in 1967, was rid of unneeded elements– the rear seat assembly has been removed, the front lid and fenders have been replaced by lightweight carbon fiber and the roof has been made of magnesium. The stripes on the modern 911R pay homage to the ’67 R; they are the only 911’s to wear this striping scheme.

Did you know?
All 911 R allocations were offered to Porsche customers who had already purchased the 918 hypercar.
