The battle for top Nurburgring lap times is a never ending competition for German sports car manufacturers. Porsche is consistently at the top of the ‘Ring time leaderboard’, though recently Mercedes has made a serious effort to change that.

The “base model” Mercedes Benz AMG GT is already a massively capable 470 horsepower super sports car.  Mercedes took the R variant through numerous tweaks and changes to create a lightweight track focused machine. Parts like the roof, rear wing, front and rear splitters, and front fenders are made from carbon fiber. The GT R has active aero components in the lower grill that automatically open and close for aerodynamic and cooling purposes.

The power of the GT R is increased to 577hp and 516lb-ft, which allows it to complete a very quick 2.9 second 0 to 60 time. Stopping the car is done effortlessly with the optional massive carbon ceramic rotors. The front and rear track of the car has been widened to improve the handling. Similar to the Porsche GT2 RS, the GT R also comes with rear wheel steering to make it more nimble. Additionally the car comes with height adjustable coil overs.

The GT R comes with very impressive technology, like its ten step traction control system and five different driving modes to suit any driving condition. The dampers can be adjusted with the touch of a button to stiffen of soften the ride. Traditionally AMG’s have been known to have an impressive rumble from their V8. The exhaust of the car is able to be adjusted from the touch of a button as well.
