The Triumph Rocket 3 TFC (Triumph Factory Custom) is a modern muscle cruising motorcycle developed around the largest production engine ever used in a motorcycle. Using the 2004 era Rocket III, a performance touring machine with a 2294 cc engine as a template, Triumph built upon John Mockett’s inline 3-cylinder layout with fuel injection, increasing the engine displacement to 2458cc and surrounding the chassis with premium suspension and brake components, trimming down the touring gear, and using a massive 240/50 rear tire.
The TFC version of the Rocket 3 came as a limited edition with only 750 units produced worldwide. The most significant feature of the TFC was the carbon fiber bodywork, encompassing the front and rear fenders, engine trim, rear seat cowling which amounted to a significant weight saving. Special badging was added to the bike along with the production number shown on a nameplate above the all-digital dash gauge. While the fancy bits and pieces added to the appeal of the Rocket 3, the heart of the bike was the enormous powerplant, putting out 180 horsepower and an astonishing 160 ft lbs of torque.
To manage the extreme power and weight of the bike, Triumph employs a host of digital riding aids that are controlled by the rider including traction control, lean sensitive anti-lock brakes, and electronic engine control modes with various degrees of sensitivity to engine, suspension, and brake input to accommodate specific driving conditions.
To keep the muscular motorcycle under control, Showa suspension components are installed front and back, with 47mm USD front forks outfitted with Brembo disc brake calipers. The power feeds to the rear wheel through a 6-speed manual gearbox feeding a shaft drive final drive mounted to a single sided rear swing arm.
The engine sounds resonate through a custom Arrow exhaust system exiting the right side of the rear wheel. Inside the engine are dual overhead cams controlling 4 valves per cylinder. Displacement is dramatically oversquare with 110mm pistons (over 4” diameter) travelling 83mm (3”) of stroke with each turn of the engine. Fuel injection and digital engine management complete the engine package and send a message to owners of similar muscle bikes such as the Ducati Diavel, the Yamaha V-MAX, and BMW R18, that the low and loud Triumph is the Beast of the Streets.
