The Ford Mustang has held a long-standing reputation of one of the quintessential American muscle cars. Mustangs have always been known to excite drivers with great straight-line speed from a big V8. There is a lot different with the new 2025 Ford Mustang GTD, as it is far and away the most extraterrestrial Mustang to ever see a public road. Even though the car is incredibly fast with more than 800 horsepower at disposal, its power is just the tip of the iceberg. There are seemingly endless motorsport derived advancements that Ford has included in the GTD which turn the heavy muscle car into one of the most potent track weapons on the planet.

Nearly every single component on the GTD is completely unique to the car, even though it shares the same general look as the standard mustang. The GTD’s suspension setup is the main talking point of this vehicle. Because of the rear transaxle, a new and unique system of pushrods and rocker arms manages the load along with transversely mounted dual-spring coil-over shocks that are mounted above the transaxle. This creates a very special looking suspension setup, which led Ford CEO Jim Farley to a brilliant idea: to create a window in the cabin which allows you to view the dampers working in real time! With multiple performance modes, the car is able to lower about 40 mm in track mode and conversely cruises around very comfortably in town.

The active aerodynamics are another major point about the GTD. Ford wanted to include advancements on the road car that their race teams weren’t able to compete with, so the DRS wing was engineered just for the GTD road car. There is a large flap on the wing along with flaps in front of the car that are hydraulically operated to increase or decrease downforce depending on if the car is accelerating, braking or cornering. The GTD is able to generate a monstrous 2000+ lbs of downforce at 150 MPH, giving it immense grip. Because of the amount of force pushing the GTD into the ground, a new spec of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R was specifically made for the car to maintain high levels of grip and to prevent premature wear.

Powering the GTD is Ford’s ‘Predator’ motor, a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 with 815 horsepower. The GTD is not lightweight, with a curb weight of more than 4300 lbs, and needed all 815 horses in order to set a sub seven-minute Nürburgring lap time. It is not only the fastest mustang ever built, but also the most capable in any high-performance scenario.
