2018 Porsche 911 GT2-RS

  • Revealed at Xbox E3 on June 11, 2017

  • Most powerful 911 model ever produced

  • Only twin turbo charged engine 911 produced

Kicking off Microsoft’s E3 presentation with a burst of excitement, the 2018 Porsche GT2 RS made its global debut as the featured cover car for that year’s Forza Motorsport 7. As it was coming near the end of the 991-production line Porsche wanted to go out with a powerhouse of a final model. Under the carbon fiber “hood” is a 3.8-liter Twin turbocharged Flat-six engine. The largest engine that Porsche has ever put into a 911, producing 700 hp and having a top speed of 211mph.

Connected to the powerful engine is a transmission ready for the task. The GT3 RS is equipped with a 7- speed double clutch transmission (PDK)which can handle the power output of the engine. This car is built for the track - everything down to the engine mount (which are specially made to stiffen in certain driving situations) aids the driver  when taking fast corners to improve the stability of the car.

When released, Porsche originally limited the production to only 1000 cars, but production was restarted to replace four cars that were lost at sea during shipment. The car on display is in a beautifully vivid Racing Yellow which was one of the standard color options for the year.

Speed was a big focus when creating the Gt2 RS, with its top speed of 211 mph which is not near the most impressive numbers this car can do. The GT2 RS is quoted to go 0-60mph in just 2.6 seconds.  Constructed with aluminum and steel, the GT2 RS emphasizes the lightweight of its construction. Furthermore, its trunk lid, front fenders, front wheel arch vents, and much of the interior is made of carbon fiber. Even the roof of the GT2 RS is made of a magnesium composite to help with its weight reduction. With all the weight reduction it has gone through, the GT2 RS sits at a curb weight or 3,241 lbs, under 1000 pounds lighter than the average car.

The GT2 RS was race focused and it sure succeeded. The GT2 RS raced by David Donohue of Road America completing the 4.048-mile track in only 2:15.17 minutes, 5 seconds faster than the previous record. When fitted with the Manthey Performance Kit, the GT2 RS completed the 12.944-mile Nürburgring track in only 6:43.300, becoming the fastest production car which held the record for 5 years.

Not only is the GT2 RS a powerhouse on the track, but also it has a few amenities for driving through town, equipped with park assistance and a rear backup camera. Still not a daily driver due it its comfortability issues on its race tuned hard suspension, but it will get you where you need it too.
