2005 Porsche Carrera GT

  • Only 1270 ever made

  • Largest V-10 engine put in a Porsche production car

  • Originally developed for Porsches LMP2000 Le Mans project

Between 1998 and 2000 Porsche was developing a race car for the upcoming Le Mans seasons, but in late 1999  when press pictures were leaked, Porsche denied the existence of the project, and it is thought that the car was put into storage. The Carrera GT owes its model run to this short-lived development, as the engine housed in the Carrera GT is a V-10 that was derived from the failed LMP2000 project.

Made with racing power in mind, even at the expense of some driver features the Carrera GT was sold out before it was released. Selling all its limited 1270 models when unveiled at the 2000 Paris auto show, even though it had a V-8 in the engine bay.  That would change when Porsche announced that it would be using their F1 derived V-10, rather than the V-8 included in the concept car. This made the Carrera GT the only Porsche with a V-10 engine. This Porsche Carrera GT on display is painted in “Fayence Yellow”,  a color that was made only for the Carrera GT, with less than 100 painted this color, and under 50 brought to the United States.

The Carrera GT is praised for its power but has a reputation for being a challenging car to handle, with a tendency towards oversteering and a lack of stability control, even though Porsche said it could handle easily.  It is believed that about 20% of all Carrera GTs produced have been totaled, with many more being in differing states of disrepair.

Even with its known handling issues, the Carrera GT is one of the most sought-after Porsches created, thanks to its unique and powerful engine, as well as the limited production run. Carrera GTs are increasing in value, with a recent sale smashing the previous record, becoming the most expensive sale on the Bring a Trailer selling for over 1.4 million dollars in the summer of 2022.
