The Koenigsegg CCX is a landmark car in the history of the Swedish hypercar manufacturer Koenigsegg Automotive AB. Introduced in 2006, the CCX was created to help Koenigsegg expand beyond Europe and meet strict global regulations, especially those in the United States. In fact, the name “CCX” stands for Competition Coupe X, with the “X” symbolizing the car’s compliance with international safety and emissions standards.
Before the CCX, Koenigsegg produced extreme, low-volume supercars like the CCR, but these models struggled to meet U.S. homologation rules. Founder Christian von Koenigsegg decided to redesign key elements of the car from the ground up. The CCX featured a newly developed 4.7-liter twin-supercharged V8 engine, built entirely in-house rather than based on a modified Ford engine. This engine produced around 806 horsepower, or up to 918 horsepower when running on E85 biofuel.
The CCX also introduced significant aerodynamic changes. Early testing at high-speed tracks revealed instability, which led to a redesigned rear wing and improved airflow management. These updates made the CCX more stable at extreme speeds and helped solidify Koenigsegg’s reputation for engineering precision.
In 2006, the CCX famously set a lap record on the TV show Top Gear, though it was later banned due to safety concerns, further boosting its legendary status. The CCX paved the way for later models such as the CCXR, Agera, and Jesko now on view, marking a crucial step in Koenigsegg’s rise as one of the world’s most respected hypercar manufacturers.
