2014 Mercedes Benz SLS Black Series Coupe

  • Final iteration of legendary M159 engine

  • Significant mechanical improvements

  • Weight savings in every aspect of the car

Upon its release in 2014, the SLS AMG Black Series was the most potent and track-focused Mercedes ever released. It represents the pinnacle of the iconic M159 engine, paired with the most advanced chassis, drivetrain, and suspension technology Mercedes could produce. The SLS was first introduced as an homage to the iconic Gullwing of the 1950s, though with the Black Series, it was enhanced to one of the most potent and thrilling performance cars in Mercedes-Benz history.

From the already serious SLS, Mercedes made improvements on essentially in every aspect of the Black Series. Like other Black Series cars, the SLS BS incorporates improved bodywork to increase downforce, including a larger front spoiler, canards, rear diffuser, and rear wing – all made from carbon fiber! The SLS Black Series takes the performance improvements much further though, starting with weight savings.

Weight was removed from every area of the car possible. A titanium exhaust system was used, saving 28 lbs. over the stainless-steel exhaust in the standard SLS. This is a more normal weight-saving procedure, compared to the carbon fiber driveshaft, which also saves nearly 30 lbs. In addition to carbon fiber body panels, a lithium-ion battery was also included, saving nearly 20 lbs. over a normal battery. In Europe, Recaro bucket seats are an option for more body control and further weight savings, though these are not legal in the U.S.

What’s truly special about the SLS Black Series is the optimization of every single aspect of the vehicle, truly making it the best of the old school. Up front, the 630 horsepower V8 utilizes a new intake system, bigger bearings, new valve gear, and much more. Wider wheels are used underneath a wider body, with a tighter suspension setup for best use on the track.

While the SLS Black Series didn’t move the world forward in terms of new technology, it represents the swan song for the naturally aspirated V8 coupe that Mercedes has been recognized for over 30+ years. This example on display was the first Solar Beam yellow SLS Black Series sold in the USA and is just one of the few delivered worldwide.
